Wallace, Alfred Russel 1869 The Malay Archipelago: the land of the orang-utan, and the bird of paradise: a narrative of travel with studies of man and nature, London, Macmillan, 2v., illus., maps (part fold.).
Preface to the Papuaweb illustrated edition.
Papuaweb is pleased to offer both volumes of Alfred Russel Wallace's seminal work in the first fully illustrated and fully searchable version of this book available on the world wide web. The Malay Archipelago is one of the most influential books ever written about the chain of islands now known as Indonesia. First published in 1869, the book was so popular that it was reprinted dozens of times during Wallace's life (1823-1913) and is still in print today. This illustrated Papuaweb edition is based on Wallace's final (10th) edition of his book published in 1890 (493 pages). The text is an edited version of the Project Gutenberg e-text version prepared by Martin Adamson (visit the remarkable Project Gutenberg at www.gutenberg.org) with additional footnotes embedded in the text [in square brackets]. As with all Project Gutenberg resources, the text should not be taken as authoritative and references should be checked with a printed copy where possible.
Most of the images have been prepared from high quality plates in the original 1870/71 Dutch edition (Insulinde: het land van den orang-oetan en den paradijsvogel, Amsterdam: P.N. Van Kampen). A higher resolution version of every image is available by clicking any of the plates in the text. The index to the book has not been reproduced here since specific text can be found using Papuaweb's local Google search. Offline users of Papuaweb may load and search the entire document (warning: 4Mb file).
